Although the interviews about the technical aspects of Atari games from the engineers who created them are fascinating, a more poignant and cautionary message about creativity versus capital pursuit is delivered when these same engineers take on roles as artists and philosophers discussing their work.. This 2 hour 11 minute documentary covers the birth of the videogame then focuses mainly on the rise and fall of Atari. It is nice to have (mostly) the whole story in one film, and it IS a fascinating story. Much of it is narrated by folks from IGN.---------------PROS:1. STAR-STUDDEDYou hear the stories from many of the very people who lived through the them. Howard Scott Warshaw, Nolan Bushnell, David Crane, Al Alcorn and more.2. ENJOYABLEIt is an entertaining watch. I expect I will put it on many times in the future and have it play in the background while I am working.3. NICE MUSIC------------------CONS:1. BARE BONES PRODUCTION VALUESThis is a sticking point for me as I am an animator. But the "look and feel" of the presentation other than the music is very dry. Almost no graphics and animation to give us a visual personality to the film. The early videogame history captured the imaginations of most every child around. There was so much that could have been done to create visual metaphors for the energy and creativity that was happening. Instead, you get a fixed camera recording talking head after talking head. Black & white titles using the classic font used on Atari cartridges. That's about it.2. VERY LITTLE VITAL INFORMATIONNext to nothing here that you can't learn elsewhere for free on YouTube by scouring through various videos that cover the history of Atari.----------------------CONCLUSION:If you can afford it, it's a worthy addition to your library. As for me, I am glad I bought it while it was discounted. The spartan production values and not containing much in the way of new information do not justify paying the full asking price. Look into getting Howard Scott Warshaw's "Once Upon Atari" before making your purchase decision.. A wonderful documentary. From the earliest games on mainframe computers to the crash of '83.One early industry luminary after another telling their part of the story. If you have any love for video games, get this!. Very informative, very inspiring.. a must watch! Got it on sale, which makes it a steal. Much feels. Very nostalgia. Such pew pew. Wow.10 / 10 - Would hold a one-button controller again.. A very moving and emotional experience. I am a game designer as a hobby, and, watching this - truly made me feel inspired, hell I even cried during parts of it. Games personally, are my life, and have been my life for many many years since I was a little kid. Thank you for putting this up, this was truly, one of the best purchases I have ever made on steam.. An absolute MUST-SEE for anyone interested in video game history. Simple as that. No, it's not the slickest doco on the planet, and it's certainly not the most emotionally manipulative. It's a straightforward recounting of some of the early steps that led to where we are now. Even someone like myself - who thought he already KNEW most of this sh*t - emerged considerably more educated. Man, Big Business sure does bite the big one. Verdict: 9\/10.(PS If you enjoyed this review, feel free to check out my two Curator pages: http:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/curator\/9284586-ReviewsJustfortheHELLofit\/http:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/curator\/10868048-Truly-Horrible-Horror-Games\/?appid=398210Cheers!). Hands down one of the best video game related documentaries i've ever seen.
